Biography

“Medical school is excellent for helping physicians understand disease," says Dr. Nishan Seneviratne. While traditional medicine can often be black and white, Dr. Seneviratne has found having additional training in nutrition and fitness to be the key to helping his patients find health and start thriving.

Before entering medical school, Dr. Seneviratne was a certified personal trainer, worked as a rehabilitation specialist, and received a certification from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. He credits his background in integrative studies with allowing him to see his medical school training through a different lens.  He received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech, earned his D.O. from Campbell University in North Carolina, and returned to Virginia Tech to complete his residency.

Dr. Seneviratne was first introduced to the medical field at 15, when he was diagnosed with a serious auto-immune disorder. “I had great doctors who helped me at the time using chemotherapies and immunosuppressants, however they could not give me any insight into alternative therapies or how diet and lifestyle may affect my condition.”

That’s when he started researching his condition and discovered functional medicine authors and physicians who offered holistic methodologies to treat autoimmune diseases without having to depend as much on medications that often came with severe side effects.

Dr. Seneviratne has experience not being listened to, and feeling like his doctor wasn’t taking his symptoms seriously and he never wants anyone to have to go through it. He understands the frustration and difficulty faced by patients trying to deal with medical problems and channels it into a strong sense of empathy towards his patients.

“It’s the reason I've joined with WellcomeMD. Being here allows me to maximize the quality of care I’m able to give all my patients. I believe in properly educating my patients and empowering them with a plan that tackles the causes of their problems instead of relying on just medications to treat the symptoms. WellcomeMD gives me the luxury to help give my patients the best chance to optimize their lives.”

Whether his patients need help managing chronic disease, becoming healthier to prevent disease, intensifying workouts, or just optimizing their health to meet the demands of a busy life, Dr. Seneviratne can help.

Dr. Seneviratne enjoys working out and plans to hike all local trails, especially those along the James River. He enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, watching TV, and reading comics.
