What do gut health, arthritis and diabetes have in common? Maybe everything.

The number of Americans with autoimmune disease is on the rise, and recent studies have found a connection between gut health and these potentially fatal conditions.

Over 23.5 million Americans are affected by over 80 identified autoimmune diseases, making them among the most prevalent diseases in the U.S. according to the National Institutes of Health. Common autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, Graves’ disease, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and lupus.

The growing consensus is autoimmune diseases are likely caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Among them is a condition known as “leaky gut.”

With leaky gut, toxins and bacteria are allowed to enter the bloodstream by passing through the lining of the intestines. This can then provoke an autoimmune response in those genetically susceptible to autoimmune disease.

At WellcomeMD, we use advanced labs to better understand your genetics, gut health and microbiome (the helpful bacteria we rely on to process food). These labs equip you to make informed nutritional and lifestyle decisions, reduce guesswork and get results.

With our advanced genetic testing, we can often detect hard-to-diagnose autoimmune diseases such as lupus, celiac disease and Sjögren syndrome, among others. Then we can offer strategies to halt or even reverse the effects of these conditions.

For example, if a patient is diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), advanced testing could clarify the patient’s gut health. With this context, small changes in nutrition and eating habits could address the cause of the IBS rather than writing a prescription to address the symptoms.

Our doctors, Neal Carl and Mary Colfer, are double board-certified in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. They combine their traditional medical background with their understanding of advanced lab testing to help you create, manage and execute a plan for your optimal health.

WellcomeMD membership gives you the tools you need to feel your best for the same cost as the typical cable & internet subscription. Please contact one of our friendly, knowledgeable staff today for more information on becoming a member or to schedule a tour.
